Cookie Policy
Outbid counts visits with Google Analytics, which sets two cookies, and keeps one value of its own in your browser. This says what each of them is, how long it lasts, and how to refuse them.

The short version
A cookie is a small file a site asks your browser to send back on every later request, which is what makes it useful for recognising people. Outbid has no accounts and no basket, so nothing here needs to know who you are. What it does want to know is how many people looked at the board and which pages they read, and that is measured with Google Analytics, which sets two cookies.
What we store in your browser
| Name | Where | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Cookie on .awesomeindie.com | Google Analytics. A random number that lets a second visit be recognised as a returning one rather than a new person. It is not linked to a name, an email or a payment | 2 years |
_ga_HGV8ZBJFX2 | Cookie on .awesomeindie.com | Google Analytics. Holds the state of the current visit, so a run of page views counts as one session instead of several | 2 years |
outbid.theme | Local storage | Remembers that you chose the light or the dark board, so the page does not flash the wrong one on your next visit | Until you clear your browser data |
Local storage is not a cookie: it is never attached to a request, so the theme value never leaves your device. The two analytics cookies do go to Google.
Until you press the theme switch, nothing is stored under outbid.theme at all and the board simply follows whatever your operating system asks for. If storage is blocked, the switch still works for the page you are on.
Analytics, and what there is none of
The analytics are Google Analytics 4, measurement id G-HGV8ZBJFX2, loaded on every page. What it reports is the page you are on, roughly where in the world the request came from, what kind of device and browser you used, and which site sent you here. It is used to see which parts of the board people actually read.
The click counts shown on the listings themselves are a separate thing and are not Google's: they are counted on our own server, one number per listing, with nothing stored about who did the clicking.
How to refuse it, and how to clear it
The analytics load by default and there is no banner on this site asking you first. If you would rather not be counted, any of these works and none of them costs you anything on the board:
- Google publishes a browser add-on that turns Google Analytics off everywhere, at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
- Any tracker-blocking extension, or a browser that blocks third-party and analytics scripts by default, stops the script from loading at all.
- Blocking cookies for
.awesomeindie.comin your browser settings leaves the script running but with nothing to write to.
Clearing site data for outbid.awesomeindie.com removes all three values in the table, including the remembered theme, and the board then goes back to following your operating system. Because the analytics cookies sit on the shared domain, clearing them here clears them for awesomeindie.com too.
Changes to this policy
This page used to say that Outbid set no cookies at all, and it was true until analytics were added on the date at the top. If the list in clause 02 ever grows again, this page changes on the same day, and the date at the top is always the current version.
Nothing here will ever be an advertising or profiling cookie without your being asked first. The whole list of what a visit is worth to us is in the table above.
